What is a shoulder, elbow and wrist adjustment?

Hey Dr. McNamara here at McLaughlin care with the lovely Carley. And we're going to do a little bit of a series on extremity adjusting. So generally most people, when they think of chiropractic, they think of us just adjusting your spines. And although that is the basis of what we do, we also work with extremities, shoulders, elbows, wrists,

as well as hips, knees, ankles, and feet.

And we treat those as well with adjusting as other therapies. So I will demonstrate some upper extremity adjusting for this part. One of our series on Carla here. So I'm going to give her the old "master-blaster" the shoulder master blaster. So to start this off, we're going to lay her down, facing up.

Now I'm going to start with the sternoclavicular joint. That's the only joint that's actually attaching our shoulder to the axial skeleton. It attaches also with the scapula in the back, but that's more of a floating type of boat. So to start, I'm just going to palpitate and you want to feel for the motion. So this is her sternoclavicular joint right there.

I'm just going to palpate and it is lacking a little bit of movement in this joint. A little bit of glide. So to adjust this, I'm like that, I'm going to place my hand here. Turn your head just a little bit, thats Good. And I'm going to apply a little bit of traction and then a thrust.

Very good. Then I move laterally to the acromioclavicular joint and sometimes this joint likes to go up high. So I'm going to shit back down. Good. And then elbows. I'm just going to give it some stimulation. Okay. And then we're going to set her up for the shoulder and the wrist get up and stand up and we'll do the chicken dance.

So let me stand over here so you can see, go ahead and place your arms right here. And then on the count of three, you're going to do a little chicken flap. Okay. So I'm coming up right here. Okay. You, we're going to send the shoulder. It's a little bit anterior to her body. We're going to push it back posterior and she's going to do the work for this.

So on the count of three, one, two, three, up, there was a nice little pop there. And then I'm going to end this with just showing you how to adjust her wrist. She's got her watch on this wrist. I'm going to go to just show you on the other one. So start off with a little bit of traction so we can get some space between those joints.

And then there's a little one. Here we go. And then just shake it around a little bit, check out the range of motion and that there's a little bit of extremity adjusting for the upper extremity. It's great for pain range of motion as well as function. So come out and see us and we can maybe adjust your extremities.
